Funeral services
The line that rings at three in the morning cannot ring out.
Funeral services have a requirement almost no other trade has in the same form: the line has to be answered, always, and the register has to be right from the first second. This page is written with more care than the others, and its list of what we do not do is longer.
The assistant answers immediately, says briefly who it is, takes only the details needed for somebody to set off, and pages the person on duty. It asks no extra questions, sells nothing and keeps nobody talking.
What is taken, and how
Almost every night call has the same shape and the same ending: somebody has to ring back within minutes, and until then they need to know where to go.
A death call
The location, the name of the contact person and a phone number. Three fields, not ten.
Paging the person on duty
Immediate transfer, or a notification call if the transfer is not answered.
Questions about paperwork
Which documents are needed, where they are obtained, in what order. From your documents.
Hours and address
Where the office is, when somebody can come, how to get there.
Any conversation about price or arrangements
Handed to a person, without exception.
Three questions and nothing more
This is the shortest flow on the whole site, and that is the intention. Every extra second spent with an automated system is a second in which the person on the phone feels alone.
- 01 Answer in the first second The company name and one sentence saying the call is taken and somebody will ring straight back.
- 02 Ask for the three fields only Where, who is calling, on what number. Nothing else. No repeated confirmations and no formulas.
- 03 Page the person on duty Transfer to the on-call number. If it is not answered, the assistant stays on the line, says so, and sends the alert by another channel.
- 04 Notify on every route A Slack message and an SMS to the person on duty, immediately, not just a ticket.
- 05 Close briefly It confirms somebody will ring within minutes and ends. It does not ask whether it can help with anything else.
What reaches the person
Here the written trail has one job: that the person on duty knows, within five seconds, where they are going and who to ring back.
| The immediate alert | An SMS and a Slack message with the location and the contact number, sent during the call. |
|---|---|
| The row in the log | With the time of the call, the location and the contact person. |
| The transcript | In full, because everything said matters and cannot be asked for a second time. |
| The transfer outcome | Whether the on-call number answered or not, which is the one metric worth watching here. |
What it does not do, and why this list is longer
We do not believe an automated system should do more than this on this line, whatever might be technically possible.
- It arranges nothing It sets no times, reserves no chapel, discusses no services and makes no decisions of any kind.
- It quotes no prices Never, in any form, not even indicatively. That is a conversation held with a person.
- It does not console and does not improvise It has no generated expressions of sympathy. It says briefly what happens next and pages a person. Simulated empathy is audible, and here it is very audible.
- It does not replace an on-call rota It is a mechanism that takes the call and pages. If nobody answers the on-call number, the product can do no more than persist on the configured channels.
- It does not hide what it is Our recommendation is that it says in the first sentence that it is a system taking the call until somebody answers. A person who discovers that halfway through a night call has every right to feel badly treated.
What funeral firms ask us
Is an automated system appropriate for this line?
For taking the call and paging, yes, and only for that. The real alternative is not a person who always answers, it is a phone ringing out at three in the morning. A system that takes three fields and pages somebody immediately is better than that, and a great deal less than a person.
How does it sound?
Short and clear, without formulas. The prompt is written explicitly to produce no expressions of sympathy, because sympathy generated by a system is the exact opposite of what helps. It is worth listening to several test calls before putting it on the line.
What if nobody answers our on-call number?
The assistant says plainly that it could not reach anybody, takes the details, and sends the alert on every configured channel. It cannot ring a second person unless you configure that explicitly as a second transfer.
What does it cost to keep the line open permanently?
Only the phone number plus the seconds spoken. An assistant that receives no calls all night costs nothing extra. The pricing page shows exactly how the total is built.

Operator handoff
Queue, operators, skills, transfer, and what the supervisor sees.

1
The tools named on this page are the ones in
App\Services\Integrations\ConnectorRegistrycarryingimplemented. Anything that is only in the catalogue, without that flag, is not named here as though it worked. -
2
The transfer uses the modes in
App\Enums\TransferMode. The path proven end to end today is through Twilio; transfers through our own PBX are written and tested but have moved no real audio.
